Beer and Blog Portland

Last Friday at Beer and Blog @evacatherder’s name was chosen from a pitcher stuffed full of the names of people hoping to win a 4G Sprint network card with a one year data plan. Judging from her tweets, Eva seems to be enjoying her new toy and I think I speak for all of us when I say we’re all very happy that she won it! It’s a pretty awesome score, no? The plan is to collect names in a pitcher and then pull a name from it. We’ll choose a name at 6pm and that person will be given the 4G card on the spot with contact details to get the 6 month plan activated. I just now almost stepped in dog vomit. I was reving up the wordsmith juju that I do before writing (read: procrastinating) by running around the house cleaning when I spotted a tidy mound of long, green grass in warm and clear liquid under my heel. If my life had a soundtrack, then is when you’d hear a skreeeeeeeech sound and I stopped myself just before stepping in it. So close I could feel its heat.

Gross, am I right? But understandable, if you know my German Shepard/Pit mutt @littlegyrl. It’s in obvious protest of this recent Portland weather. I’m sure of it. Think about it: This is August? Seriously?

Come on, sunshine! Puppy wants a Dog Day of Heaven!

The weatherman says things are about to change for us soon, though. And just by the hair of the dog, too, because this Friday is Dog Days of Summer on the patio at the Green Dragon.  You may recall we tried to do a doggie get-together back in June, but the weather was even worse then. It was a bona fide downpour. And who wants to have a beer with soggy doggies?

No, @littlegyrl and I have a good feeling about this Friday. And yes, maybe we have far too much faith in the Googles, but nonetheless we hereby invite all well-mannered pets and their dogs (hee-hee) to join us on the patio of the Green Dragon from 4-6pm. @littlegyrl promises not to celebrate this event by puking up more grass. What a nice doggy!

Ah, summertime, that season where folks forget about eying the sky for signs of snowflakes and move on to lamenting the hellish heat waves wafting through town. Never mind that here, in the Pacific Northwest, our winter months are mild compared to most of the states East of the Rockies. And let’s also forget that our summers, while hot, rarely include the sweltering humidity slamming the South.

Complaining about extreme temperatures is what we do here in the Willamette Valley, spoiled as we are to escape the highest and lowest of Mother Nature’s folly. Another thing we like to do, especially around this time of the year, is take the time to enjoy our good fortune in mild weather and our gorgeously green scenery and go camping.

If you haven’t gotten the chance to pitch a tent yet this season, here’s the perfection chance: August 8-9 is the Bear and Blog at Bagby Hotsprings!

The plan is to leave Saturday, August 8 at noon and return after lunch the next day. Here’s a bit more information from @donpdonp, the foilage lovin’ host of the Bear and Blog venture into the wild:

It’s a 1.4 mile walk from the parking area to the hotsprings, and there are numerous overnight campsites along the trail at 2 miles and further. We’ll take the closest available camping area to the hotsprings. The site was discovered in 1880 by Bob Bagby, with a bathhouse built in 1920 and rebuilt in 1981 after burning down in 1979. The Bull of the Woods Wilderness is part of the Old Cascades, a 30-million-year-old range that predates the High Cascades.

What to bring: a tent and sleeping bag or hammock and enough food and water for dinner on Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday.
